Guantenemo Bay
Canberra has rejected a request to play host to former inmates of Guantanemo Bay. Mr Obama needs to empty the illegal prison camp; it is an embarrassment to his supposed liberal tendencies and election promises. If the inmates go home they may face torture or worse. There are now 60 detainees, declared innocent (this is ignoring the large proportion of probably innocent prisoners, some as young as thirteen, who plea bargained to get out of the prison) who cannot go home. America have not just taken a few years of their lives; they have essentially stolen their futures, their pasts… it’s a form of murder. The human cost is never considered in these cases. Regardless of anything else, these people will have lost jobs, homes, lost touch with family and friends, lost their sense of self worth and in some cases their credibility. All because of a suspicion. No. This is unfair and wrong.
I don’t think this is a campaign promise that Obama will go back on. This would be a bad mistake. He’s going to make sure when he does it it’s done right as well. At least I’m hoping…
I hope so too. My point was more that in order to keep his credibility, Obama *has* to keep this promise; which is why this rejection by Australia is such a big deal.
Oh this is one that he can’t go back on. That would prove to be a very costly come next election.
